Many people are in the habit of changing batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide warning devices. That is an extremely important thing to do, but it is two steps short of making sure you and your loved ones are safe not only during the holidays, but every day of the year.
Life Saver One: Change the batteries. Recently, comments have been made that the “old” idea of changing batteries in safety warning devices every six months no longer applies because batteries last a lotlonger – some even make claims they last for up to 10 years. So why bother? The answer is simple: Suppose the battery doesn’t last as long as it says it will or somehow malfunctions? Isn’t it worth a few dollars spent on new batteries to protect the lives of you and your family? If you believe the batteries still have some useful life, don’t toss them out, just use them in something else. Some fire safety experts also recommend that you never use rechargeable batteries in safety devices because they vary greatly in quality and how long they hold a charge – some rechargeable batteries lose their charge in less than a month. Why take that chance? Also, keep in mind that even if your safety devices are hard-wired to the electrical system, they almost always have a battery backup – just in case the power goes out! As part of your routine, make sure all devices are free of dust and lint or anything else that may interfere with operation of the equipment.
Life Saver Two: Test the equipment to be sure it works. New batteries won’t help if the devices are no longer functional. As soon as you replace those batteries, test to make sure the equipment works. Nothing lasts forever – including fire alarms. It is generally recommended that you replace alarms every ten years – even if you think they still work. Just think, if your fire alarm is working 24/7, 365 days a year, in ten years it has worked over 87,000 hours!! If you don’t know how old your safety equipment is, consider replacing it. Use a permanent marker to write the installation date on the inside of the cover so you always know just how old your equipment is.
Life Saver Three: Make an escape plan and make sure every member of your family knows what to do when an alarm sounds!! Did you know that a house fire can double in size every 25 seconds? Did you know that if a fire alarm sounds, you generally have less than 5 minutes to get you and your entire family out of the house and to a safe location? Did you know that your family’s’ chances of surviving a home fire double if you have working warning equipment in place? Did you know that most deadly home fires in America happen during the night – between 10p.m. and 6a.m. when most everyone is asleep? These facts illustrate why it is so important to have a plan in place. Waiting until an alarm goes off in the middle of the night to try to figure out what to do is too late.
